Sources say T-MOBILE wants to merge with SPRINT to reduce prices
John Legere, CEO and President of T-Mobile USA, leaves, and Sprint Corp. CEO Marcelo Claure speaks in an interview with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), New York, USA, Monday, April 30, 2018.
A person familiar with the matter told CNBC's David Faber that T-Mobile is considering cutting its multibillion-dollar merger with Sprint. The Department of Justice announced earlier this year that it has reached an agreement on a merger of more than $ 26 billion between the two communications companies. . After the summer announcement, T-Mobile and Sprint's stock prices hit record highs, with Sprint rising to $ 8.06.
But as investors' confidence that T-Mobile will eventually have to curb its IPO has gradually increased, Sprint's stock price has fallen below $ 6.
Under the agreement with the Justice Department, Dish will acquire Sprint's assets for $ 5 billion, including its Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and other prepaid phone businesses. In turn, T-Mobile will provide the company with at least 20,000 cellular sites and hundreds of retail stores. Dish will also be able to access T-Mobile's network for seven years.
But the deal won't close until the two companies settle ongoing lawsuits filed by several state attorneys led by New York and California. The trial is set to begin on Monday.
